Spirit

Born June 1994. Son of Alfie and Leo.

Our little surprise! Looks just like his dad. Very sweet natured and gentle for a colt! Likes to play with Bracken, and doesn't understand why the dogs, cats and chickens don't want to play with him! Now has Twiggy, Picasso and Fern to play with too. Poor little Spirit, we were just about to separate him from his mum to wean him before the birth of Fern, when Fern suddenly arrived early. He didn't know what had hit him. We separated Alfie and Fern into an adjoining paddock, but Spirit kept climbing through the fence to get to his mum. Alfie was quite mean to him, only having eyes for her new baby. Spirit persisted though, and in the end we decided to leave him in with Alfie and Fern and see what happened. He stayed just a few metres away the whole time. If Fern lay down so did Spirit, it was so sweet to watch. It was as if he was saying 'look, I'm still your baby too'. After a couple of hours, Alfie seemed to accept Spirit, though if he tried to suckle she wasn't having any of it! Spirit and Fern soon became incredibly close, and now, if Fern calls for her mum and can't find her, she goes to her big brother.
